Psst, do you want to know what the fellas have been up to since they got to Internews? Irene Choge, Violet Otindo and Dann Okoth have been a busy lot. They are the three senior journalists, who have been awarded fellowships at Internews, to allow them time and create opportunities for in-depth journalism on a variety of Health issues.
Irene Choge is a journalist with Nation TV, Violet Otindo is with K24 and Dann Okoth writes for The Standard. Apart from working on stories, they have been discussing quality journalism at various forums. They have exchanged ideas with Internews trainers and with Christine Nguku (former news anchor, now media consultant and Chair of Alternative Media Network), Gatonye Gathura (Science Editor Nation newspaper), Ida Jooste (Internews Country Director) and Andre Smith (South African science documentary maker).
“All the sessions have been unique,” said Violet Otindo, “I am learning that each story should be an investigative story.” The fellows have also attended training workshops at Internews, including a data journalism workshop where they learnt about using data and statistics like that available on KODI, the Kenyan government’s Open Data Initiative.
